Tip 1: Average Weekly Calories

Based on your height, weight, lifestyle, and other factors, there are ways to calculate your daily calorie intake.

If you want to lose weight, you will have to intake fewer calories than what is supposed to be your daily calorie intake. Consider your weight loss journey to be a set of 7 days. If one day you eat more than required calories, supplement that by eating less the next day. In short, keep your weekly calorie low.

 

Tip 2: Avoid Sugar

In India, you would see a lot of aerated drinks and other sugary foods in the market. These are some of the worst things you can put in your body when you are trying to lose weight. At least till you reach your weight loss goals, avoid any and all sweet foods. Cut out all of the sugar in your diet (slowly and steadily) and you will start seeing IMMEDIATE results.

 

Tip 3: Desserts Breakdown

Three things all Indian desserts have in abundance are sugar, flour, and butter. From boondi ke ladoo to gulab jamun, we can’t resist it. I know your mouth is already watering. But did you know that this is a deadly combination of 3 extremely unhealthy foods to put in your body? Remember that whenever you are eating desserts as comfort food, you are also putting a lot of flour and butter into your system which would be counterproductive to your weight loss goals.

 

Tip 4: Calories from Healthy Food

We have grown up thinking of fruits, nuts, dairy products to be healthy food. That doesn’t mean they don't add to your daily calorie intake. A lot of fruits have high levels of sugar (fructose) which would also increase your calorie intake considerably. Dairy products like cheese or whole milk have high calories too. 

 

Even though nuts would be considered to have good fats, a lot of people tend to go overboard with the amounts of nuts they eat. Only a fistful of nuts is enough. 

 

Tip 5: Starchy Vegetables

 

Potatoes

 

A lot of Indian dishes also have a lot of corn or potatoes. These starchy vegetables like corn, potatoes, peas, pumpkins, or colocasia are loaded with carbohydrates. It is important to avoid carbohydrates after sunsets if you want to get lean. Instead of starchy vegetables, go for leafy vegetables that are highly nutritious with protein, iron, and a ton of other nutrients.

 

Tip 6: Complement this Diet with Exercise

 

Exercise

 

Diet is enough for losing weight, but for gaining lean muscle mass, you HAVE to devote some time to exercise at least 3-4 times a week. Intense cardio always burns fats rapidly to provide energy. Weight training develops your muscles. During this process, your muscles get micro-tears and healing that requires a steady supply of energy by burning fats.
